Please find below some basic security tips:

- When buying a bike, budget for security.
- Take out insurance, Bike shops may offer specialist cover.
- Record, register and security mark your bike.
- Register your bicycle model, make and frame number.  This assists the police in
returning recovered bikes to their rightful owners and also acts as a
deterrent.
- A number of proprietary marking and tagging systems are
available, UV marker pens are cost effective.
- Take a clear, colour photograph of your bike and make a written record of
its description, including any unique features, so that you can report it
accurately if stolen.

Basic security (At Home)

More than half of all bicycle thefts take place from an owners Property.
Simple crime prevention methods can lesson your chances of having your
bicycle stolen.

- Keep your bike in a secure garage or shed and fit a good quality lock to
the door.
- Keep it out of public view.
- Secure it to an immovable object or consider installing a floor or
wall-mounted anchor lock for extra security.

Basic security (Out and about)

- Avoid parking in isolated or dimly lit places, leave your bike where a
potential thief will have to perform in public.
- Park your bike safely and considerately, make use of cycle parking stands
where these are provided.  Park your bike where it will not be a hazard,
obstruction   or inconvenience to others.
- Don't lock it in the same place on a regular basis.
- Always lock your bicycle, even if you are leaving it for just a few
minutes.
- Lock your bicycle to an immovable object and through the frame.
- Secure removable parts - wheels, lights, pumps etc.

Locks

There are many different products on the market - you should look for
products that have been tested against attack, for a determined or
dedicated thief you will need a lock that can guard against attack for 3-5
minutes.  It is worth spending proportionately more on a lock for a more
expensive bike.

DO NOT LEAVE YOUR BIKE UNLOCKED!

Mark your cycles with your postcode or other forms of your individual
identity, not necessarily stickers as these can be removed.  This should
also be done to parts that can be removed.  Keep a note of what identity
you use and where you place it.

Register your property including cycles for FREE and improve your chances
of getting it back if it is lost or stolen.
